Designed in the late 1800's by architect, Ernst Flagg as a
hunting lodge for Frederick Bourne, the president of Singer Sewing Machine Company.
Located on a & acre Island in Chippawa Bay on the St. Lawrence River, the Indians
called it Dark Island because of the dark trees that grew there. I first met Dr. Martin,
the owner of the castle in 1978. He commissioned me to do a drawing of Jorstadt for
him. I found it difficult to capture the feeling of the Island in a single image, so
